Fix the Error
Brief
We were asked to create a digital hand-in to highlight the importance of amending the Online Safety Bill to include a child online safety advocate. The Government Department for Science, Innovation and Technology was our target audience, as well as our campaign supporters.
Approach
Working with a copywriter, I developed the idea of using the visual language of online error codes to illustrate that there’s an error in the Bill. We mocked up spoof error messages and pop-ups calling on the government to ‘Fix the error’ and amend the Bill.
Other playful messaging included: ‘Error 404 – Child Online Safety Advocate not found’ and ‘Child Online Safety Advocate does not exist. Try again.’
We were initially briefed to create an engaging email, however, we pushed a physical activation idea to generate more of a buzz. To deliver our message to a wider audience, we developed visuals for a digital moving billboard that drove to the House of Parliament.
Results
We used some of the creative for organic content on LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter; these were the best-performing NSPCC posts of the month.
We're still waiting to hear back on the amendment to the Bill as it continues to progress through the House of Lords.
